Gates (‘65) denies rumors he’s running for President

Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates (‘65) asserted this week that he has no plans to run for President.  He did, however, caveat that he was flattered by the numerous “Draft Gates” movements that are sprouting up around the U.S.   Mostly notably, there is a “Draft Gates” website – www.draftgates2012.com.   A Pentagon source close to Gates stated, “Secretary Gates is both amused and flattered by the website, but he will retire from government for good later this year. He has never run for any political office and has no intention of ever doing so.”  Though President Obama’s Defense Secretary, Gates is a Republican.  Gates originally served as George W. Bush’s Defense Secretary and was invited to continue at the top Pentagon post by Obama after being elected President in 2008.  Prior to coming to national prominence,  Gates worked for the Central Intelligence Agency, and was the President of Texas A&M University.
